With a comprehensive specification system and wide applicability, carbon steel plates are available on the market in a wide range of specifications, from thin cold-rolled sheets to thick, medium-thick, and extra-thick plates, all of which can be mass-produced. This meets the thickness and size requirements of various applications, including precision parts, lightweight components, large-scale infrastructure, and heavy equipment, making its versatility far exceed that of most special steels.
Carbon steel plate, also known as carbon fiber plate, is a flat steel product with iron and carbon as its core components. The carbon content is controlled between 0.0218% and 2.11%, and it also contains trace amounts of impurities such as silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. It does not contain intentionally added alloying elements such as chromium and nickel, making it the most widely used and cost-effective basic type of steel. With its stable mechanical properties, excellent processing adaptability, and extremely low production cost, carbon steel plate is used in major core industries such as construction, machinery manufacturing, energy and chemical engineering, and transportation, making it an indispensable basic structural material in modern industrial systems.
Classification and Performance Characteristics of Carbon Steel Plates by Carbon Content
The core performance of carbon steel plate is determined by its carbon content. Higher carbon content results in greater hardness, strength, and wear resistance, but lower plasticity, toughness, and weldability. Based on differences in carbon content, the industry generally classifies it into three main categories to suit different working conditions.
Low-carbon steel plate: General-purpose structural carbon steel
Low-carbon steel plate, also called mild steel plate, is currently the most widely used type of carbon steel plate. Its greatest characteristics are excellent plasticity and toughness, superior cold and hot working performance, and it can easily complete various processing techniques such as bending, stamping, cutting, and welding, without easily cracking or deforming during processing. At the same time, the material is uniform, has sufficient toughness, and good impact resistance, making it suitable for the load-bearing and forming requirements of conventional structures. Its disadvantages are relatively low hardness and strength, and weak wear resistance, making it unsuitable for harsh working conditions with high strength and high wear. Common Q235 and Q195 belong to the category of low-carbon steel plates and are widely used in the manufacture of general structural components.
Medium-carbon steel plate: Medium-load high-strength carbon steel. Medium-carbon steel plates achieve a balance between strength and toughness. Compared to low-carbon steel plates, its hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance are significantly improved. After simple heat treatment, its mechanical properties can be further optimized, resulting in stronger load-bearing capacity. It also retains a certain degree of plasticity and weldability, with moderate processing difficulty, meeting the stress requirements of most mechanical parts. Its shortcomings include poor low-temperature toughness and susceptibility to stress defects in large, complex welded structures. It is primarily used for manufacturing mechanical parts, equipment frames, and structural components for engineering machinery that bear moderate loads.
High-carbon steel plate: High-hardness, wear-resistant special carbon steel.
High-carbon steel plate is a high-strength, hard steel plate with high hardness, extremely strong wear resistance, and excellent compressive and deformation resistance, capable of withstanding high-intensity wear and extrusion loads. However, it has extremely poor plasticity and toughness, making welding and cold bending difficult and prone to cracking. It is typically only suitable for simple processing or applications where deformation is not required after forming, and requires specialized heat treatment processes to optimize its performance. This type is rarely used in building structures, mainly for manufacturing wear-resistant load-bearing components such as knives, molds, wear-resistant liners, and high-strength spring parts.
Core material advantages of carbon steel plate:
Excellent economic performance, suitable for large-scale engineering applications.
Carbon steel plate raw materials are mainly iron ore and scrap steel, making raw material acquisition convenient and production costs low. Its selling price is far lower than that of special steels such as stainless steel and alloy steel plates. Meanwhile, the material is 100% recyclable, eliminating resource waste and resulting in lower long-term operating costs. This significantly reduces the overall cost of infrastructure and mass manufacturing projects, making it a preferred material for large-scale industrial production.
Excellent process adaptability and outstanding machinability: Conventional carbon steel plates possess excellent cutting, stamping, bending, welding, and forging properties, making them suitable for various conventional machining processes. No special equipment or complex processes are required, resulting in high processing efficiency and excellent forming effects. Furthermore, the hardness, strength, and toughness of the steel can be precisely adjusted through heat treatment processes such as quenching, tempering, and normalizing to meet diverse working conditions.
Uniform material properties and high stability in engineering applications: Carbon steel plates have uniform material properties and high density, free from defects such as bubbles and inclusions. Their mechanical properties are stable, and their compressive, tensile, and deformation resistance meet standards, satisfying the stress requirements of conventional working conditions such as building load-bearing, equipment support, and container pressure bearing. The structural safety and stability have been verified through long-term engineering projects, demonstrating extremely high reliability.
Main Engineering Applications of Carbon Steel Plates
Building and Infrastructure Engineering
As a core material for infrastructure, carbon steel plates are widely used in the steel structure of factories, bridges, stadiums, and high-rise buildings, including steel beams, steel columns, floor slabs, and curtain wall structural components. They can also be used for roadbed paving, foundation pit support, and temporary engineering construction. With their stable load-bearing performance and low cost, they have become an indispensable material in civil engineering.
General Machinery and Engineering Machinery Manufacturing: Low-carbon steel plates are used to manufacture equipment housings, frames, supports, and general mechanical parts; medium-carbon steel plates are suitable for gears, shafts, engineering machinery structural parts, agricultural machinery parts, and other medium-load components; high-carbon steel plates are focused on molds, wear-resistant parts, tool steel base materials, and other high-strength, high-wear components, comprehensively covering the material needs of different loads and working conditions in the machinery manufacturing industry.
